Tastes like autumn

What do the following cities have in common?

  • Morton, Illinois
  • Floydada, Texas
  • Anoka, Minnesota
  • Circleville, Ohio
  • Half Moon Bay, California

They all claim to be the Pumpkin Capital of the World. Obviously this is marketing hyperbole, and not the ruling of some international pumpkin committee. We spent yesterday afternoon at the 39th Annual Art & Pumpkin Festival in Half Moon Bay. There were, in fact, several very large pumpkins on display (the largest about the size of a big bean bag chair), but there seemed to be more normal-sized pumpkins in the numerous farms along Routes 1 and 92.  The festival itself was primarily along Main Street, with hundreds of stalls selling everything from carved wood bowls to photography and pumpkin hats.  There was music, karaoke, pie eating contests, and the infamous Farmer Mike, a master pumpkin-carver.  If you like pumpkin pie or cheesecake, one could probably sample about 30 or 40 different ones, all claiming to be “the best”.
